Not a brief consultation. Not a one-size-fits-all program.
My Next Step is an individualized discovery and navigation program by Exceptional DREAMS for neurodivergent students and their families. It helps students and families better understand strengths, interests, support needs, and practical next steps so they can move toward support that is a better fit. This may be a catalyst to get more support from a school, an alternative to what may already be offered, or simply as a tool for deeper understanding.
Rather than assuming every student needs the same service, My Next Step helps identify whether the best next step is a mentor, a resource, a program, advocacy support, or a combination of supports.

Many students do not need more noise, more generic advice, or one more program that does not fit. They need a clearer understanding of themselves, a more organized path, and support that reflects how they actually learn, communicate, and engage.
At the same time, families often need practical help finding these opportunities. Most importantly, students must have a seat at the table so that the goals being set are their own, not someone else’s.
My Next Step was created to provide that structure. It reflects Exceptional DREAMS’ mission to offer education, advocacy, mentorship, and diverse resources with students firmly at the center
My Next Step is designed for neurodivergent students and their families, especially when a student’s needs are being misunderstood, inconsistently supported, or are difficult to address within traditional systems alone.
This may include but are not limited to students navigating:
ADHD
Autism
Learning Disabilities
Giftedness
Executive Functioning Challenges
Twice or Multi Exceptionality
Behavior or Emotional Regulation Needs
This program is also for families who know something is missing but are not yet sure what type of support would help most.
Getting started begins with a referral, inquiry, or direct contact from a parent, caregiver, school staff member, or community partner. This first step helps Exceptional DREAMS understand what is prompting support and whether My Next Step appears to be a good fit.
After initial contact, the family completes intake information and a first meeting is scheduled. This helps create a starting point for understanding the student’s current situation, the family’s concerns, and what they are hoping to better understand or change.
1. Referral and Intake
Students and families may enter My Next Step through caregiver inquiry, school referral, community partner referral, or direct outreach. Intake gathers the basic information needed to begin the process with more clarity around current concerns, needs, and goals.
This stage is meant to be simple and welcoming. It creates the starting point for the conversation without overwhelming families.
2. Discovery Session
Exceptional DREAMS connects with the student and caregiver to better understand the student’s strengths, interests, curiosities, communication style, support needs, and goals.
To build an accurate, well-rounded profile, we use a variety of interest forms and recognized observation tools (such as the SIGS-2, GRS2, Renzulli Scales, BASC-3, or GARS-3). These established rating scales allow parents, teachers, and our team to capture a wide spectrum of characteristics—from intellectual abilities, creativity, and leadership, to social-emotional needs, behavioral patterns, and communication styles.
We may further balance these structured tools with guided conversation, reflection prompts, and games to support the student’s self-expression. This process is not a stressful clinical test. It is a collaborative way to listen carefully, identify patterns, and help the family understand what support will truly fit best.
3. Individualized Planning
After the discovery session, Exceptional DREAMS creates a practical written plan based on what was learned. This plan organizes key themes, outlines recommended next steps, and turns the conversation into something clear and actionable.
This part of the process matters because understanding is important, but families also need direction. My Next Step is built to turn insight into movement.
4. Connection to Supports and Opportunities
Once the plan is developed, Exceptional DREAMS helps connect the student and family to the support or opportunity that best aligns with what was identified. That may include mentorship, educational resources, advocacy support, enrichment opportunities, or community-based programs.
Not every student will need the same pathway. The purpose of My Next Step is to make those connections more intentional and more individualized.
5. Follow-Up and Adjustment
Support needs can shift over time, and a recommendation may need to change once a student begins engaging with services or opportunities. My Next Step is designed to be open to follow-up so progress can be reviewed, barriers can be identified, and the pathway can be revised when needed.
This helps families avoid feeling like they were handed a list and left on their own. It keeps the process responsive while still maintaining structure.
Each student’s pathway may look different depending on what comes out of the discovery process. Possible next steps may include:
A mentor connection rooted in shared interests, communication style, or neurodivergent understanding.
Advocacy support for school communication, planning, or navigation.
A resource connection through parent education materials, educational tools, or strategy-based supports.
A referral to a program, opportunity, or community-based activity that better fits the student’s interests or goals.
A blended pathway that includes more than one form of support.
